You will have recently received an email from Professor Tim Blackman and MDXSU President Aman Siddiqi highlighting the importance of registering to vote.

If you are not registered to vote by Tuesday 7th June, you will not be able to vote in the national EU Referendum on Thursday 23rd June.

Luckily, registering is quick and simple, and can be completed online within a matter of minutes.

Need more info on what the EU Referendum is all about? We’ll run you through the basics…

What is a referendum? A referendum is a national vote in which the UK government gives all eligible citizens the chance to vote ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to a question of national importance.

What is the referendum about? In the EU Referendum on June 23rd the question being asked is: ‘Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?’

How do I register? You can register online in minutes at gov.uk/register-to-vote

What documents do I need to register? You’ll need your National Insurance number to register to vote. Look for it on payslips or official letters about tax, pensions or benefits. You can also ask for a reminder through the post. If you really can't find your National Insurance number, you can still register: just click 'I don’t know my National Insurance number' and then either of the two options within this.

Can I vote in the EU Referendum? You can vote in this referendum if you are registered to vote in the UK, are 18 or over on 23 June 2016 and are:

  • A British or Irish citizen living in the UK, or
  • A Commonwealth citizen living in the UK who has leave to remain in the UK or who does not require leave to remain in the UK
  • A British citizen living overseas who has been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years
  • An Irish citizen living overseas who was born in Northern Ireland and who has been registered to vote in Northern Ireland in the last 15 years

Are you home from uni on 23 June? Make sure you register at the right address
Does it matter where I'm living? If you’ll be back at home on 23 June, make sure you’re registered at that address to vote in the EU Referendum.

What if I’m away over summer? If you’re away, you can apply to vote by post or by proxy, providing you’ve already registered to vote. The postal vote application deadline is Wednesday 8 June and the proxy vote application deadline is Wednesday 15 June.

When is the deadline? The deadline to register is Tuesday 7 June. If you are already registered to vote you will receive a poll card by Wednesday 25 May.

You can find out more about whether you’re eligible to vote and to register on aboutmyvote.co.uk
