CAREERS & EMPLOYABILITY CAMPAIGN SUCCESS

Friday 12-07-2013 - 16:30

Last academic year, plans to change the careers and employability service were announced and MDXSU lobbied and campaigned to become a part of the process, working toward student focussed solutions to changes to this important student facing service.  At first students were unsure of plans and so a campaign gathered momentum to ensure 6 key facets of the service remained or were introduced.

298 students signed up to the postcard campaign, sending a clear message to the University that the following 6 points should
be achieved:

1.       Guaranteed face-to-face appointments for students within 2 weeks of requesting one.
2.       A retaining of the current services that students value: CV clinic, job fairs, face to face interview prep, physical resources in the careers library.
3.       A year on year increase in funds ring fenced for careers and employability support.  Students value employa
bility above all else.
4.       Student representative presence during the tender process and quality assurance, reviews and renewal process in order for students to have confidence in this outsourcing.
5.       A bespoke award recognising skills students gain through co-curricular activity.
6.       Annual research conducted on the efficiency of this service from the perspective of its users.
In tandem with this student action, 2012-2013 President Shreya Paudel highlighted student concerns and the gathering momentum of an empowered campaign, and negotiating with University decision makers.

This resulted in the assurance that points 1, 2, 5 and 6 of the student requests were granted.

A victory for MDXSU and University partnership, the ongoing engagement of MDXSU student officers with the employability service and the university in the long term is welcomed and mutually assured.

President 2013-2014 Sayed Alkadiri stated: “I want to personally thank my predecessor, Shreya Paudel, for his hard work and strength to achieve this monumental success.  MDXSU applauds the maturity and mutual understanding of the negotiations; trying to work together to improve a service so valued by students.”
