The following people are all successful in their fields, and they've got there by being leaders - leading from the front and inspiring the people they lead. Scroll down to read their stories of where they are now and how they got there.

 

 

NICOLAS ROOPE

THEN: Fine Arts and Sculpture student. NOW: Awarding winning product designer, leader in creative digital design, and serial entrepreneur.

After graduating with a degree in Fine Arts and Sculpture, Roope became a young leader in design and innovation. Nicolas founded and directs digital design agency Poke, leading campaigns for international clientele. He also cofounded Hulger, the creative electronics company which launched the low-energy Plumen lightbulb, winning multiple awards for design and innovation.

 

GEORGE ALAGIAH OBE

THEN: Elected student officer and editor of his student newspaper. NOW: Award-winning broadcaster.

George's experience as student editor and an elected student officer at his Students' Union helped prepare him for a successful career in journalism. After graduating he worked in print journalism for seven years, before joining the BBC news team as a foreign correspondent. He has interviewed the likes of Nelson Mandela and won numerous broadcasting awards.

 

 

VICTORIA PHILLIPS

THEN: Law student and President at UEA Students’ Union. NOW: Respected lawyer.

After being elected as the first woman President of her Students' Union, Vicky then became the second female President of NUS! She has since worked on campaigns for students and women, and now works with Thompsons Solicitors. As Head of Employment Rights she leads 100 lawyers handling 35,000 cases a year, focusing on issues like illegal internships, zero hours contracts and equal pay.

 

 

PALLAB GHOSH

THEN: Physics student and editor of the Students’ Union newspaper. NOW: BBC science correspondent.

Pallab moved to the UK from India to study Physics at university in London, where he also edited his student newspaper. He now works a a science correspondent for the BBC, and was formerly President of the World Federation of Science Journalists. Alongside his work, Pallab campaigns for greater diversity within the science media community.

 

 

KATIE BELL

THEN: Economics students, society president and elected student officer. NOW: Marketing expert and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Middlesex University.

Economics graduate Katie Bell experienced her first taste of leadership at university, chairing societies and representing her fellow students on the university’s Executive Committee. She went on to work with Nestle and as Vice-President of Global Digital Marketing at GlaxoSmithKline, and is now Deputy Vice-Chancellor at our very own Middlesex.

 

MANDY TELFORD

THEN: Primary Education student and elected student officer. NOW: Elected to local government.

While studying Primary Education at university, Mandy was elected as Vice President at her Students' Union. She then worked for the National Union of Students, leading campaigns against the government's policy to charge university top-up fees, regularly writing for The Guardian. After working as a policy advisor to Tessa Jowell, Shadow Minister for the Olympic Games 2012, Mandy now works for local government.
