Middlesex Students Union shortlisted for prestigious national award!

MDXSU is delighted to have been shortlisted in the London Living Wage Champion awards. We are 1 of only 2 students unions nominated for this award and we are delighted to be getting national recognition for our decision not only to pay all of our staff a living wage but also to champion it within our local community.

Aman Siddiqi, the SU President, said that “we see first-hand the problems caused by poverty pay. So many of our members are living below the poverty line as result of not being paid enough to live, as a students’ union we are proud to champion equality, fairness and social justice and paying the living wage is a great example of how we are able to turn our principles into action.”

The award will be announced as part of living wage week from the 2-8th of November. To see MDXSU listed alongside such notable other nominees such as ActionAid UK, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust, PWC LLP, Southwark Council and more is a proud moment for our whole organisation.

For the past 2 years every single member of staff within the SU has been paid a living wage of £8.80 or above. The benefits to the staff members have been obvious but the benefits have also extended to the organisation. Ed Marsh the SU director commented ‘the living wage has both improved the lives of our employees but also the organisation they work for. In terms of attracting talented people, staff satisfaction from knowing every colleague is paid a fair wage and our reputation within the local business community it has done wonders for our organisation. We would encourage every organisation in Barnet, London and across the UK to adopt the living wage so that they can experience the benefits that we have.’

The Director of the living wage foundation extended his congratulations to the SU by saying “I would like to send huge congratulations to MDXSU on being shortlisted for the Living Wage Champion Awards. The commitment of Living Wage Employers to responsible pay makes a real difference to families and communities across the country. We look forward to celebrating this even further when announcing the winners of the Awards during Living Wage Week.”
