MDXSU President Simba Lkaderi has been elected to the National Union of Students' (NUS) Welfare Zone Committee.

Simba was one of just eight candidates from students' unions across the country to be elected to the national committee.

The election took place at the NUS Welfare Zone Conference on Thursday 27th October, with elected student officers from students' unions nationwide voting to decide which of the nineteen candidates would be elected to the committee.

As part of the Welfare Zone Committee, Simba will help shape the work of the National Union of Students, and represent all seven million students from across the country - including students from Middlesex - on a national level, championing the issues you care about and fighting for changes you want to see.

What are Zone Committees?

The National Union of Students represents seven million students from across the country, working to support students and promote and defend their rights. The work of NUS is divided into five policy areas, or 'Zones'.

Welfare is one of these five Zones, alongside Further Education, Higher Education, Society and Citizenship, and Union Development.

Helping to shape priorities, drive research, develop policy and work for students in each of these Zone areas are Zone Committees - including the Welfare Zone Committee which Simba will now work on.

These committees are made up of elected Student Officers from students' unions across the country, representing their students within their institution and more widely.

The Welfare Zone Committee will specifically oversee NUS work that supports the wellbeing of students in their institutions, their homes and their families, including: institutional housing, private housing, students at work, diversity and discrimination on campus, council tax, advice, sexual health, benefits, crime and student health issues.
