MDXSU Vice President Health & Education and Science & Technology Orla Hillary has won Student Nurse of the Year at Whittington Health Trust.

Orla was given the award at Whittington's annual Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards held on International Nurses Day earlier this month.

Alongside her work representing and campaigning on behalf of MDX students at Middlesex Students' Union, Orla spent several months earlier this year working in Whittington's Intensive Care unit in North London, which this award recognises.

Orla was described as "the most hardworking student nurse I have ever met" and her colleagues were hugely impressed by the difference Orla made during her time at the hospital, her passion for learning and her popularity with patients.

Orla said, "Out of all the awards I've won throughout my time at university this was the most surprsing, mostly because I had no idea I'd even been nominated let alone win... I love nursing and although I always wanted to go into paramedics/air rescue, I have grown to love being a nusrse and love being able to care for patients."

Nine awards were given in recognition of the work of midwives, nurses, healthcare assistants and students across Whittington Health Trust, with the Director of Nursing and Patient Experience, Philippa Davis - who sat on the judging panel - commenting, “It was a real honour to have been part of the judging panel for these awards, and hearing about not only the big changes our teams are making, but also about the small acts of kindness that make a huge difference to our patients. I am incredibly proud to be leading such a talented and dedicated team of nurses and midwives.”
