What are advice drop-ins?

Advice drop-ins are run every Wednesday 11am-1pm in the Quad by the MDXSU Student Advice Service. Just look out for the stall in the central courtyard.

Drops-ins are a chance for students to chat to a trained student advisor about any academic issues they might have. From getting support on university appeals and complaints, to advice on how to avoid plagiarism, drop-ins are an opportunity to talk through an issue confidentially.

What can I expect?

The drop-in offers an introduction to what we can do to help - you can expect a warm reception and a chance to book a private appointment with an advisor, as well as general tips about handling academic pressures.

Whatever your particular problem, you can come along to chat to us - our advisors will be able to talk you through your options or refer you to the right expert for extended support.

Give me an example...

Say, for instance, that a student experiences bereavement or illness - they might wish to appeal their grade for a module due to the exceptional circumstances impacting on their ability to perform academically. That student could then get in touch with the Advice Service, who would help them identify whether they have a case, and if so, how they can progress with their appeal. The student would write their appeal themselves, with additional support from experienced advisors.

Or perhaps a student feels like they do not have adequate access to services they need to fulfil their degree requirements, such as the library for getting their coursework done, or work experience to enable them to complete a placement. That student could contact an advisor to discuss whether they have grounds to make a complaint and if they do, the advisor will guide them through the process.

What's UniHelp for then?

UniHelp is the central place to go to with all general enquires, from submitting coursework to IT queries. You can book appointments with all of the University's support services such as speaking to someone about your finances, loans, bursaries and grants, housing, welfare, debt, VISA and immigration issues.

You can also book appointments to see a careers advisor, counsellor and get help with your academic study skills, as well as speak to someone in the disability or dyslexia support team about how they can support you. The Student Achievement Officers are also based there and they can help you with all of your course-related issues.

But I'm not on campus on Wednesdays

...if you can’t make it to one of the drop-in sessions, then you can contact the Advice Service via email at suadvice@mdxsu.com and an advisor will get back to you.
