Top Ten MDXSU Moments this term

Monday 19-12-2016 - 13:00

Term one done! With teaching finished for 2017 and campus in holiday-mode, we've been reflecting on the past term and our favourite moments.

From five weeks of Freshers' fun to the new Free Wheelers bike scheme, here are our top ten moments of the autumn term.

Read on to find out what Middlesex Students' Union have been up to over the past few months and get excited for what's to come in 2017!

1. Our new Community Placements job scheme

Since our Community Placements scheme launched in September, fifty Middlesex students have found paid, part-time, fulfilling roles which utilise their skills and knowledge while also benefitting the local community. Find out more here.

2. Launching the MDXSU Community Kitchen

The first MDX Home Community Kitchen took place on campus in September, giving local people in need a safe, warm, friendly place to go for free food, clothing donations and good company! The next monthly Kitchen will take place on January 14th - click here to find out about volunteering!

3. MASSIVE ELECTIONS

This term, Middlesex students have elected more Student Voice Leaders on more courses than ever before, and in December we also saw an MDXSU-record-breaking turnout in our NUS Delegate elections. Watch this space for more information on our main elections next term - you'll get to elect MDXSU's next President and Vice Presidents!

4. Making lots of noise at the National Demo

On November 19th we headed into central London with students and university staff from across the country for the NUS National Demo. Megaphone, placards and a whole orchestra of vuvuzelas #demogamestrong

5. The new Free Wheelers bicycle hire scheme

Back in August, a student submitted an idea for change on our website about a bike hire scheme on campus, and you loved the idea! The university did too, and this term your Vice President Joe has been working in partnership with the University to plan the scheme. We're excited to announce that our Free Wheelers bike hire will be up and running in January 2017 - more information coming soon!

6. Fighting your corner on tuition fees

Earlier this year, government changes to tuition fees meant that current students at Middlesex could find their fees unexpectedly increased in 2017/18. After working with the university, we were proud to announce that MDX would be one of the universities which would not be raising fees for students continuing their studies next year. Read more here.

7. MDXmas merriment

Our MDXmas fortnight included elected Officer elves, festive #FreePeriods giveaways, a special end-of-term MDXSU House Party and of course reindeers and shopping at the MDXmas Market! Pros: feeling very merry extra early. Cons: way too many mince pies...

8. Getting FRESH

Singing along to Grease at the Outdoor Cinema, joining amazing student groups at Freshers' Fair, lounging around at Netflix & Grill, smashing jenga at Arcade, cruising down the Thames in a huge party boat - Freshers' was bigger than ever before. What was your favourite bit? If you loved Freshers', don't miss Refresh in January!

9. Delivering results on exciting campaigns

The term your Student Officers have been working on a variety of campaigns, from bikes and fees (above), to tax-free tampons and 24 hour Grove. They've also been working on successful ideas we've received from Middlesex students through our ideas for change page. You can find out more about our current campaigns here - get in touch if you'd like to get involved!

10. Our brand new Student Leaders Conference

We've had two Student Leaders Conferences this term, each attracting over 150 students who engaged in insightful debates and voted on policy to shape MDXSU's work. If you want to be involved in improving your uni and directing what your Students' Union is working on, come along to the next conference on Thursday 26th February.
