Fairtrade

What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade is an initiative to obtain better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers, globally. It’s about supporting the development of thriving farming and worker communities that have more control over their futures and protecting the environment in which they live and work.

What is the problem with cotton products?

Many cotton farmers in developing nations live below the poverty line and are solely dependent on middlemen for the sale of their produce. These middlemen often exploit the farmers by buying their cotton at very low prices which can often be below the cost of production. In addition to this, the cotton farmers in rich countries like USA and EU countries, are offered large amount of subsidies which create an artificial low priced market with which the farmers in developing countries are unable to compete with. Thus these rich countries end up exporting their cotton at lower prices than those in developing countries. This creates a massive imbalance within the cotton trade & farming community.

How does Fairtrade help resolve this issue?

Fairtrade closely works with small-scale cotton farmers in developing countries and aims to build a farmer-owned organisation, ultimately discarding the involvement of a middleman. It promotes sustainable cotton growth and guarantees a Fairtrade Minimum Price and Fairtrade Premium for seed cotton farmers. Many farmers are starting to improve their lives with the use of Fairtrade movement.

The Fairtrade Symbol

When you buy products with the Fairtrade Mark (), you support farmers and workers as they work to improve their lives and their communities. The Fairtrade Mark means that the Fairtrade ingredients in the product have been produced by small-scale farmer organisations or plantations that meet Fairtrade social, economic and environmental standards.
