NUS Islamophobia Panel

Speakers:

Zeba Talkhani - Talkhani is a writer, publishing professional and an independent literary consultant with over six years of editorial experience. Her essay "The Difficulty in Being Good" was featured in the "Nasty Women"; a collection of essays, interviews and accounts on what it is to be a woman in the 21st century. Most recently, she was signed by Sceptre Books for her debut "My Past is a Foreign Country"; a memoir that explores feminism within Islam and Talkhani's experience of growing up in Saudi Arabia as well as living in India, Germany and the UK as a young woman.

Samayya Afzal - Afzal is a graduate in Biomedical Science from the University of Bradford, and formally the twice elected Women's & Campaigns officer at the University of Bradford Students' Union. Afzal co-founded of the national "Students Not Suspects" campaign in opposition to the Prevent duty and its restrictions on universities across the country. She has an interest in feminist politics, Islamophobia and racism.

Azeezat Johnson - Johnson is a social geographer, interested in developing conversations around Black (and) Muslim geographies. She completed her PhD at the University of Sheffield in 2017 and focused on clothing practices of Black Muslim women in Britain. Her research explores how the performance of one’s identity changes as we move through and interact with different objects, bodies, gazes and spaces. This pushed against a static reading of Black Muslim women (that are too often constructed as either Black or Muslim). It also moved beyond the hypervisibility of the headscarf within academic and popular debates by pointing to the multitude of different presentations that are used.

The event will be hosted by the President of MDXSU Islamic Society and Hate Crime Campaign intern Ayah Benberna.
