Active Bystander Training

Racism, bullying, sexual harassment and other inappropriate behaviours contribute to a toxic culture.

The impact they have on people can be hugely detrimental – leading to stress, anxiety and mental health problems. As we are seeing in the news, it can be deeply corrosive and damaging if these behaviours and attitudes are normalised over time. That’s why it’s essential for everyone to know how to speak up when problems arise.

This session will cover: overcoming fear and paralysis in challenging situations; using the right words and expressions when challenging behaviours; how to tackle ‘micro-inequities’, including eye-rolling, sighing, constant interruptions, and unconscious bias. This session will be run by The Active Bystander Training Company.

Crash Course on How to Build a Business

You’ve just got a new idea for a business, or maybe you’ve always had one but didn’t know where to start.

Starting a business is an exciting time, but it can sometimes seem like an overwhelming task to get going. “How do I build a website with my own domain name?”, “What about branding? I’m going to need a logo and socials!”. Then there’s thoughts about your capacity, “I don’t have all the skills I need or the time”, “I might need a team”. And then there’s the finances, “How will I price my product”, “I think I might need funding”.

Thinking about all of these things in one go can put a lot of people off, but the key is to just get started, be patient and enjoy the journey. In this workshop, we’ll cover all the key things you need to think about to get started and what tools, resources and opportunities are available to you to help you.

Understanding Liberation & Being an Ally

In the current circumstances, it’s more important than ever to connect and support one another. Recent events this year have inspired a whole wave of virtual activism among students to raise awareness and continue conversation on topics such as the Black Lives Matter movement, the implications of the pandemic, and the status of different gender identities and bodies. But what does it take to be a good ‘ally to the cause’? This session will help you to find the tools necessary to create space, visibly support and, provide useful allyship to those around you both at Middlesex and beyond.

The Art of Active Listening: Caring for yourself and others

Listening may seem like something that is second nature. However, we have all found ourselves drifting off in conversation, or talking more than we should. Good, active listening enables us to have a greater understanding of other peoples’ emotions, experiences and needs, which makes us understanding and compassionate leaders. Tuning in to our own thoughts and feelings is equally as important- it helps us establish our boundaries, think through our emotional responses, and look after ourselves effectively. This session will support you in being able to listen properly to others as well as yourself in your society or liberation group, and in your daily life.
