The bee population has declined nationally and globally over the last few decades, as the use of bee-killing pesticides increases and habitat is lost. This is scary not just because of honey... Bees play a really important role in food production! Seventy percent of human food crops, which supply about ninety percent of the world's nutrition, are pollinated by bees, and 4,000 kinds of vegetable in Europe wouldn't exist if it wasn't for pollinating insects!
Did you know... Middlesex Uni has it's own beehive? It's on the top of the Grove building! The MDXSU allotment (more about the allotment below!) also has bees in mind - it includes a bee-friendly, pollen-producing habitat for local bees. Follow the MDX Urban Bees at www.twitter.com/UrbanBeeArchive.
