MDXSU has won its first ever nationally recognised accolade for progress towards sustainability – the NUS Green Impact Bronze award.

This award reflects dedication to positive environmental action over the last year - work that is paving the way for the union to become an environmentally friendly heart to the MDX community.

Sayed Alkadiri, MDXSU President, commented: "sustainability was one of our union's top campaign priorities this year, so I am ecstatic that we have been awarded Green Impact Status, the MDXSU’s first award for this project. In 2013/14 we have been promoting sustainability and good practice in environmental behaviour at the forefront of everything we do.

“I’m really proud of our work on this initiative and the team here is looking forward to expanding on this next year by winning the Green Impact Silver Award"

NUS Vice President (Society and Citizenship) Dom Anderson commented that Green Impact “is more than just making sure students’ unions building cut down on waste and save energy. It’s about embedding habits in students which last for a lifetime, and getting them out into their communities”

Over 100 students’ unions across the UK took part in the competition this year, taking actions like combatting the declining honey-bee population, setting up ethical credit unions, and promoting health and wellbeing across the wider community.

Green Impact offers a framework for staff and students to improve the ethical and environmental credentials of their union. Following a full environmental audit, MDXSU was rewarded for their achievements as part of the annual gala dinner at NUS Services Convention.
