On Wednesday 28th April, 6,000 Londoners - including over a hundred Middlesex University students - attended the Citizens UK Mayoral Assembly to hear from the two forerunning candidates in the London Mayoral elections.

Representatives from religious and community groups from across the capital gathered at the Copper Box arena to hear from Labour candidate Sadiq Khan and Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith.

Both candidates announced their committment to Citizens UK's core campaigns prior to voting day this Thursday 5th May.

A key part of the evening focused on the London Citizens' Housing Manifesto - which our Shouting for Housing campaign contributed to - and demanding radical solutions to solve the city's housing crisis.

Other campaigns concerned the London Living Wage, the Syrian Refugee Crisis and jobs and employment opportunities for young people in London.

Citizens UK asked the candidates to implement a range of asks related to these areas if elected, including:

  • Setting up a Rogue Landlord Taskforce
  • Ensuring new building developments aim for 50% affordable housing
  • Delivering 10,000 London Living Rent homes (where rent costs no more than one third of renters' income) by 2020
  • Giving every 16-18 year old in London access to good quality work experience
  • Ensuring more Greater London Authority suppliers pay the London Living Wage to their staff

Both candidates agreed to the majority of the asks - you can see the full recap here. This is a huge win for both Citizens and for our Shouting for Housing campaign, who have been working all year on gathering evidence from students about their experience of housing in London, and raising awareness of the crisis through exhibitions and info stands.

As the Mayoral Assembly demonstrated, the Mayor of London has the power (and the £17bn budget) to tackle issues that we all face as Londoners, such as the quality and affordability of housing.

Therefore it's really important that you vote in the Mayoral elections this Thursday 5th May and have your say on what you want London to look like!
