MDX students are missing out on the student experience, belonging and inclusivity and we’d like to change this by gaining bookable daytime spaces for all student groups, on their campus.
Currently, society leaders are unable to book classrooms for their events before 5pm, despite classrooms all across campus sitting empty for large parts of the day.
Already 60% society events take place in classrooms but forcing them to be in the evening ends up excluding students and means that daytime activities like lunches and course socials sometimes simply can’t be held.
For many, coming in early for a class and not leaving until nighttime is simply inaccessible. Perhaps people have long commutes home, or don’t feel safe at nighttime, or even need to plan their work shifts around classes. As a result of inflexible booking times, these students are restricted from finding their sense of home at MDX, from developing their graduate competencies by hosting their own events and will be forced to see their campus as one that simply does not serve them.
MDX and MDXSU has made a promise to you all when you enrol, that MDX can be a place for you to not only get your degree, but really experience University. You’re all paying for this promise, but right now its not being delivered.
Welcome100 is a 100-day long period run by the SU and the University to ensure that students feel at home here, accommodated for. Now that that standard has been set - that all students have access to lead, shape and engage – we’re committed to continuously striving for this inclusion.
Daytime bookable spaces would do just that. It would allow society leaders to look after the needs of their members, build communities for students of every circumstance to feel seen and heard, and create friendships that will carry people through even the toughest times.
It will bring campus alive and make sure there’s no corner or classroom where there isn’t something happening.
As your Activities Officer, I’m already in the right rooms trying to change policy and am working alongside the Education Officer to ensure this proposal will never come at the expense of your academic spaces.
But I can’t do this without you. Sign this petition to create a system that works for you, rather than you having to work to fit into the system. With your backing we can show that this a challenge no one is facing alone, and create a system that works for you, rather than forcing you to work to fit within it.
