Middlesex University has come out on top for environmental impact, receiving a 1st from student-led environmental movement People and Planet. MDX was praised for its Environmental Policy and Carbon Reduction in particular, scoring 100% in these areas!

The People and Planet University League is the only independent league table in the UK to assess universities according to ethical and environmental criteria. Middlesex came a very respectable 24th out of over 150 UK universities, and was just one of thirty universities to receive the highest grade.

The achievement comes less than a year after MDXSU was presented with the NUS Green Impact Award, received in recognition of MDXSU’s commitment to reducing environmental impact, and sustainability projects such as our student allotment. The allotment was set up last year in order to provide fresh produce for the RAG soup kitchen, which helps those facing food poverty and homelessness in the local community. It also includes a pollen-producing habitat for the Britain’s crucial but rapidly declining bee population.

Aman Siddiqi, MDXSU President, was thrilled with the news: “Last year we were ranked 52nd and this year we are 24th. This is great for Middlesex making our university more and more sustainable. At MDXSU we will continue to work hard and ensure that Middlesex University continues its journey of sustainability.”

People and Planet is the largest student campaigning network in the UK, working to protect the environment, end world poverty and defend human rights. Middlesex’s higher position in the league table demonstrates all the work done by MDX, your student officers, and students themselves in the past year. Hannah Smith, who compiled the data, says progressing universities like Middlesex are “proving their ability to change their impact on communities and the wider world… [and] stepping up to meet student expectations for an education that supports them to respond with speed to the biggest challenges of our time.”
