Our second Student Leaders’ Conference of the year took place on Monday 4th December 2017 in MDX House.
Following a similar structure to our first conference, students form across our sections attended to meet and share ideas on how they can make positive change to the work MDXSU does for all Middlesex students.
It began with some time for the Executive Team, which includes the 6 School Voice Leaders and 4 Sabbatical Officers, meeting with students and answering some questions. There was also a time during this part of the evening for students to watch the videos the President, Ben Edwards, and the four Vice Presidents; Raquel, Joe and Erica, had produced to update students on what they have been up to! You can still watch these videos by looking here!
Ben opened the conference, and invited everyone watch the videos and to think of some possible questions for each officer. Each officer took to stage to present their work so far, and to take some questions from the floor.
Next up was the chance for students to have their say on policy ideas submitted by students. This time round, there was just one policy submitted through the Idea for Change process on the MDXSU website.
This policy, concerning having a MDXSU-owned musical instrument loan store than can be accessed by Student Groups, was met with a lot of discussion from students about the access for students and the benefits this could have for societies, particularly the musical and performance based groups, putting on events for students.
The policy was passed with 39 votes for, 2 votes against and 4 abstentions. The next steps for this idea are for it to be discussed by our Executive Committee, which could potentially result in a campus-wide referendum!
If you have any similar ideas, or anything you want to change about MDXSU or Middlesex University, whether it relates to academic work or not, you can submit it using our online system and have the chance to present idea at the next conference!
Finally, at the end of the Conference, students had a chance to hear from some of our candidates to be part of the NUS Conference Delegate from MDXSU. Each candidate had the opportunity to give a short speech and then take some questions from the floor. The election for our delegation took place on the week of conference and you can see the results by clicking here.
Thank you to everyone that attended our December Student Leaders’ Conference. If you couldn’t make it this time but would like the opportunity to quiz the officers, or vote on policy put forward by other students, make sure you book onto the next conference – on Thursday st January 2018 – by clicking here.
