Wednesday 06-08-2014 - 11:13

Making the transition between life as we know it and university can be daunting - but if you get a few things organised before you arrive on campus you'll find most things flow pretty easily from there. Check a few of these admin tasks off your to-do list during the August lull and you'll be able to dive straight into the fun stuff - learning new skills, making new friends and enjoying student life!

1. Get your Student Oyster card sorted Save 30% on public transport travel costs by applying for your 18+ Student Oyster card now! You'll need to have an Oyster card this year as Transport For London goes all out for cashless payment - that means no coins and no fivers. Be prepared in advance and you'll save money from your first bus journey onwards!

2. Register to vote The General Election is happening in May 2015 and all UK, EU and Commonwealth students can vote. You only have this one big chance to directly influence the next 5 years of your life (unless of course you're a dedicated activist...in which case - more power to you!) so make sure you can participate by enrolling on the electoral register. It's a simple 5 minute process which can now be done online; you can even do it on your smartphone - it's really that easy!

Register your right to be heard now!

3. Apply for a car parking permit One for the drivers amongst you - Barnet (and London more generally) is notoriously strict on car parking so give yourself a bit of time to apply for a permit before term begins in order to bypass a series of unwanted fines. It's boring but it'll be so worth it!

4. Explore childcare options If you're a parent, you'll be glad to hear that Middlesex University offer an on-campus childcare service for 50 weeks of the year - you can download an application form here. For more ad hoc childcare, check out the list of local childminders that Barnet Council has endorsed on their website.

Middlesex's catering service Chartwells are another on-campus employer who'd love to hear from you...check out their parent company Compass's website for vacancies.
