Middlesex students have the right to study, live and socialise without fear of sexual harassment. Unfortunately, according to an NUS survey from 2010, one in seven female students have been the victim of a serious sexual or physical assault, while 68% have been victims of one or more kinds of sexual harassment.

Due to the scale of the problem, just this year the government ordered an enquiry into harassment and violence towards women at universities nationwide.

To help tackle the problem, Middlesex Students' Union and the MDXSU Women’s Assembly are launching the ‘Call It Out’ Campaign, supporting and encouraging Middlesex students to speak up when they see or experience sexual harrassment in any form.

Sexual harassment includes unwanted groping, pinching, grabbing, uninvited kisses or bodily contact, but it's not just physical. It also includes wolf whistling, catcalling, inappropriate sexual comments, and sexually-based insults, jokes, songs or taunts. It can be emotional, verbal, and suggestive – anything that makes someone feel uncomfortable.

It can happen on campus, in halls of residence, in bars or nightclubs, on public transport or online in Facebook groups or on Twitter. It can be someone you know well or somebody completely anonymous.

The Call It Out campaign is all about speaking up when you see sexual harassment. From a wolf-whistle to a grope, this type of behaviour is absolutely unacceptable and your Students' Union does not tolerate it, and you shouldn’t either. If you've witnessed or experienced sexual harassment on campus, you should:

1) Call It Out - make sure everyone you know knows that this is not acceptable

2) Report it - talk to university security, or email studentadvice@mdx.ac.uk to speak confidentially to an adviser

3) Sign up to get involved in our Lad Culture campaign
