We're excited to announce that student media at MDXSU is changing - from MDXSU Media to Pow Media!

Pow Media is a new brand that will house Pow FM, Pow TV and Pow Mag - a free termly print magazine. The overhaul comes after longtime student media veteran Sarah Bennett (Vice President for Art & Design, and Media & Performing Arts) decided to take this branch of student opportunites in a fresh longterm direction that will provide more students with a better experience in both creating and consuming student media. The new media platform will also be totally free - goodbye membership charge!

Our new identity reflects a bold, fun and confident new direction for student media at Middlesex and Pow will be a community that unites creative and ambitious students who share a passion for great media in all the forms it comes in.

Today, we're celebrating this new initiative by annoucing the roles that will be available to all Middlesex students at Pow Mag, our new magazine for student features, reviews and artwork.

Become a founding editor at Pow magazine and you’ll get to create a printed publication, experience the challenges and rewards that are part of producing a widely read magazine, and learn how to use industry-wide software InDesign.

The 10 types of roles below are open to students (from any course, and any year group) who wants to try their hand at writing and editing - there are so many opportunities available this year that you may well discover a talent for something you never thought you could do, whether that's designing a layout, networking with pros at press film screenings or writing a piece that gets everyone talking!

The deputy editor...works closely with Sarah Bennett, the Editor in Chief of the magazine and MDXSU staff to develop, design and deliver a stylish and topical magazine for Middlesex students. You’re organised and able to balance out different people’s priorities and still get things done.

  • Perfect if you're...confident when working in a team, have an eye for detail, experienced enough to get the job done, and determined to work that will help land you an editorial job!

Sub editors...are the people who spot misplaced apostrophes in cafe signs - and dream of correcting them! You’ve got a knack for crafting sentence that flow, read a lot, and dread SPAG comments on your hand-ins.

  • Perfect if you're...hoping to work in the media, want to learn how to use industry standard InDesign, and ready to embrace your inner grammar nerd!

Features editors...find all sorts of topics interesting - especially when they’re explored in depth! You love reading magazines, have lots of ideas for features, and have a sharp eye for good writing.

  • Perfect if you...love writing and hope to curate well-designed, well-researched pages that you can show off to future employers.

Comment editors...love to ponder all the angles on big, juicy issues in depth. Current affairs and campus debates interest you, and you know how to discuss sensitive issues diplomatically.

  • Perfect if you’re...a thoughtful writer who likes to research ideas and hopes to use Pow Mag as a stepping stone towards writing for the national press.

Politics editors...like to follow the news and care about the big issues that impact young people. You’re not afraid to share why you feel politics matters and you want to make sure that your peers don’t miss out on news that affects them.

  • Perfect if you’re...looking for a platform to report on political topics, and want a print portfolio of work for when you graduate.

Lifestyle editors...are into discussing healthy eating, recipes, fashion, restaurant reviews (and tips on managing housemate politics!).

  • Perfect if you’re...a lifestyle magazine fan and are excited to pick up the skills needed to present copy and illustrations attractively.

Music, film & performance editors...appreciate arts culture in all its forms and have a good knowledge of what’s current in music, film and performing arts.

  • Perfect if you’re...interested in comping some free tickets, love to be out and about sampling different kinds of entertainment, and can express your views compellingly!

Sport & health editors...are avid sports fans, know their way round match fixtures and care about getting Middlesex’s victories and losses the attention they deserve.

  • Perfect if you’re...hoping to transfer those writing and editing skills into a sports journalism role down the line.

Tech & business editors...are into management tips, gadget reviews, start-up news and interviews with students who’ve set up enterprises!

  • Perfect if you’re...interested in writing and curating articles for students who appreciate the roles that tech and business play in our lives.

Events editors...check out campus events (for free!), then share what’s on with other students so that no-one misses out on the good stuff.

  • Perfect if you're...sociable!

If one of these opportunities feels like something you'd like to try out or find out more about, come along to our media launch event at 5pm on Wednesday October 8th. We'll be introducing all the new opportunities across Pow TV, Pow FM and Pow Mag there and providing everyone interested with the details they need to apply for roles.

There will also be lots of information about the training and equipment available to those involved in student media, plus one-off writing/filmmaking gigs for those who would like to try their hand on an ad hoc basis!

Looking forward to seeing you there!
