Deal struck means FREE security for societies until Christmas
 
MDXSU have announced that societies who need security for their events in the forum will now be able to have them at no cost to themselves. This is an issue which has been raised by societies for years as one for MDXSU to address. Our student officers have spent the summer in negotiations with the University on societies’ behalf and have today confirmed that any and all security needed by societies for on-campus events will be free up until the end of Term 1.
 
Sarah Bennett, Vice-President Art and Design, Media and Performing Arts, said:

"It is with great pride that I am able to make this announcement today on behalf of the students’ union. From my past experience leading societies I know that organising events can be costly especially when factoring in the security costs. This is why today’s news will have a massive impact on student-led events and will go a long way to making this campus genuinely ‘social’. Now that this cost has been eliminated the money saved can be better invested into the societies. I hope that with this we will see an influx of on-campus society events."
 
Security is often needed for society-run events that take place in The Forum in order to ensure the safety of students attending an event. As many as 8 security at a cost of £10 per hour were required for events in The Forum in 2012/13, proving a large cost to societies’ potential profits.
 
This new announcement - which eliminates a potential cost of hundreds of pounds per event entirely – that has been met with a renewed ambition from societies keen on hosting events from debates and quizzes to national, religious and cultural days and festivals of celebration, and with celebration from those involved in striking the deal.
 
The pilot will be reviewed at the end of the current term, and if MDXSU are able to evidence that free security leads to a greater number of events and activities then they will be pressing hard for it to be extended.
