Students' Union statement on the tragic incidents of last Thursday night

Thursday 06-11-2014 - 06:00

As students will have been made aware by the University last Thursday night a tragic incident occurred outside a student union society event which resulted in a young man losing his life. At this difficult time all of our thoughts are with the friends and family of the deceased. Wherever possible we have been providing support and information to students however this feels like an appropriate opportunity to make a public statement reflecting on such a sad incident.

The latest statement released by the University contains the following information:

“In the early hours of Friday morning, a 22-year old man was stabbed on campus following a fight outside MDX House. The police and ambulance services attended to the incident but sadly the man died later in hospital. The police have since arrested and charged two individuals.

Although the incident took place out of hours and the deceased was not a Middlesex student, we continue to remain shocked and saddened by what happened and would like to reassure students that we take their safety and wellbeing very seriously.”

We are aware many of our students are naturally worried and concerned as to how this could have happened in our student community. We understand the need for answers in order to find a collective sense of understanding and reassurance. Whilst the victim was not a student this in no way reduces the sadness that we feel or the impact that this has on our community. As a student family we will grieve together, we will reflect together and then we will find a collective response to this tragedy.

The SU remains committed to supporting all students who have been affected in any way and we are currently offering support to those students most immediately affected. In addition we are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with the society who hosted the event. If you have been affected in anyway please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the SU (e.marsh@mdx.ac.uk) and we will assist in any way that we can.

This remains an ongoing police investigation which the SU is assisting in any way that it can. In addition the police have put a call out for any witnesses or information. Please contact the incident room on 020 8785 8244 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 should you need to. The police will also be located on the Hendon campus from next week to offer support and gather information – we will keep staff and students informed on their location.
