Vote in the EU Referendum

This Thursday 23rd June, you have an important role to play in helping to decide the future of the United Kingdom.

This is your chance to vote on whether the UK should remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union, and whatever way you choose to vote we strongly encourage you to make the most of your democratic right to do so.

With almost two million university students across the UK, you are part of a group that will play a decisive role in the outcome of this referendum, so your voice is incredibly important.

Like many other UK universities, the Middlesex University Board of Governors support remaining in the EU as membership of the European Union allows MDX students to study in other parts of the EU and improves international collaboration between researchers.
Our outgoing and incoming MDXSU Student Officers are also personally supporting the Remain campaign - you can view their statement here.

However, regardless of their stances, we strongly encourage you to make your own decision and have your say accordingly.

Further information on the referendum can be found at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk, and you can view the official Vote Leave and Stronger In campaign websites by clicking the previous links. There are also sites like FullFact which aim to pull out the facts beneath the claims from both sides.

Read on for practical information on how to vote.

Where do I vote?

You will need to head to your local polling station - It's usually not very far from home! The address of your local polling station can be found on your polling card, or you can find it by entering your postcode online here and then calling your local electoral registration office.

When is voting open?

Polling stations are open between 7am and 10pm on Thursday 23rd June.

What should I bring with me?

Bring your polling card if you have it, though if you've lost this or forget it on the day don't worry - just go to your local polling station and give your name and address when you arrive.

How do I fill in the ballot paper?

Once you're at the station the polling clerk will give you your ballot paper and answer any questions you might have about how to fill it in. Further information is also available online here.

What if I'm unable to vote due to an emergency?

If you have an emergency which prevents you from voting - such as illness or a medical emergency - you can apply for an emergency proxy vote by 5pm on voting day Thursday 23rd June.

I have registered for someone I trust to vote on my behalf.

If you have registered to vote by proxy (allowing somebody you trust to vote on your behalf) remember to tell them which way you want to vote!
