The first Student Leaders’ Conference of the new academic year took place on Thursday 9th November in MDX House.

Over a hundred people came to hear the officers reporting on their work, to vote on ideas which will become MDXSU policy, and to listen to Nicola Dandrige, the CEO of the Office for Students.

Following networking and getting to know other students from across the university, your President Ben Edwards and Vice Presidents Joe Cox, Raquel Marques and Erica Ramos took to the stage to talk about their work since commencing their roles in July, and answered questions from students. You can watch their video reports on Facebook here, or on Youtube here.

Next, there was a Q&A session with our guest speaker, Nicola Dandrige, CEO of the Office for Students, who was asked about a range of issues affecting Middlesex students.

Later, our newly elected Student Voice Leaders and Student Group committees were able to attend skills-boosting workshops on how to engage more students in their work, as well as an informative session on the vital MDXSU advice service.

Ideas for Change

A key purpose of the conference, hosted by MDXSU President Ben Edwards, was to provide students with an opportunity to vote on policies as submitted by students. The policies submitted for this event were as follows:

Access for Disabled Students – passed – 80 votes in favour, 4 abstain
University Owned Gallery Space – passed – 58 votes in favour, 12 votes against, 14 abstain

If you want to submit a new idea to be voted on at the next Student Leaders Conference on December 4th, you can submit it through our ideas for change module on our website, and get other students to support you!

These ideas can be anything from policies that will affect your studies, to something that you think MDXSU should campaign on nationally.

Photos from the event will be available on our Facebook page shortly.
