Meet the 2014-15 elected officer team!

Monday 21-07-2014 - 13:23

Every year, Middlesex students go to cast their votes in the student elections. Each person has a say in who runs MDXSU for the next academic year, and this spring you chose to elect the following students into the four full time sabbatical officer roles:

- Aman Siddiqi MDXSU President

- Sophie McKay Deputy President and Vice President for Health, Education, Science & Technology schools

- Jean Wong Vice President for Business and Law schools

- Sarah Bennett Vice President for Art, Media, Performing Arts & Design schools

Sharp-eyed second and third year students will recognise Sophie and Sarah as returning officers, re-elected to continue their ongoing work. Aman and Jean are two new additions, joining the team to build upon the progress made by their 2013-14 predecessors, President Sayed Alkadiri and VP for Business and Law Jennie Brown.

The purpose of the SU is to help all Middlesex students get the most out of their time at university, and the elected officer team head up the MDXSU staff and guide our work to ensure that you are democratically represented, given once-in-a-lifetime extra curricular opportunities, and leave university feeling proud to be a part of our vibrant MDX community.

The officers are here to amplify your ideas on how to make these things happen, and listening to you is a massive part of their job. Read about them here, get to know who does what and then stop them for a chat when you see them on campus over the coming year - they’ll be glad to meet you!

Aman Siddiqi, MDXSU President

Allow me to introduce myself; I am the President of our Students’ Union and I am pleased to be elected to represent you in 2014-15.

My job is to act as your voice during your time at Middlesex University, and as such I have a leading say in steering the direction our Unions’ strategic goals. Where I guide the union is up to you - our journey can only be determined by where you want to see us go.

As an officer team our biggest priority for this year is to take the General elections head on. We aim to create campus wide awareness of the elections by running a big campaign, encouraging students to take the initiative and vote. Every four years the deciding factor of our future is given to us in the form of a ballot paper and we should seize the chance in 2015 to benefit our interests as the youth of the country.

We will ensure our transparency and sustainability as a Union by continuing our campaign for cheaper food on campus and continuing to campaign for anonymous marking. Two years ago, the Students’ Union underwent a ‘Year of Change’; last year saw us take a ‘Year of Action.’ Now we are about to embark upon a ‘Year of Excelling’ where the student community excels, becomes stronger, and feels more united.

We aim to ensure you are offered more course-based opportunities and that all Middlesex University graduates enter the world of work that create better employment opportunities.

A few of the other positions that I hold in the University are the Chairman of the Union Board of Trustees, Union Executive Committee, and I am also a member of the University Board of Governors.

So please, join me on my journey to make Middlesex a better place for you & I and please do not hesitate to contact me. Also, feel free to stop me if you see me about, for a chat or just to say hello. I’d love to hear about your experience and any concerns that you have.

See you on campus!

Sophie McKay, Deputy President & Vice President for Health & Education, Science & Technology

Hello MDX! I studied Children’s Nursing here at MDX and was a Student Voice Leader for all 3 years, RAG President 2012/13, and a member of the MDX Trampolining Squad. I was elected to be your Vice President last year and have just been re-elected for a second term to support you guys full time for another year. I also work part-time, as a children’s nurse.

My current roles now include championing employability, volunteering, RAG and welfare issues - and of course, if you are a part of the Health & Education, Science & Technology schools I am your go-to-person!

A lot of students in my schools are on professional placements and often feel they miss out on events and student opportunities so it is my biggest mission to make sure you guys are able to participate - just share your ideas with me and I’ll do my best to make it happen. If you have any academic or course-related issues, the best person to consult is your Student Voice Leader, but you can send me a friendly email or pop into our new office on the lower floor of the Forum too - I'd love to chat!

If you want to improve your employment prospects, get involved in volunteering, take part in a student adventure, or just want to chat, head over to my office in the Forum, or drop me a line!

Sarah Bennett, Vice President for Art, Design, Media and Performing Arts

I was a student from 2010 and graduated with BA Honours in Television Production – Technical Arts. From my studies I developed an interest in the Students’ Union media, but was scared of joining when I started because I didn’t know anyone. Fortunately I talked myself into signing up and that was all it took to get me more involved in the Students’ Union in general.

Whilst studying for my degree I wrote for the student newspaper and hosted my own radio show. Beyond the broadcasting studio, I hosted radio events and helped out by DJing (and getting gunged for charity...I have photos!). In my final year (2012 - 13) I was the Publicity Officer for RAG (Raise and Give). My RAG experience was amazing - it gave me the opportunity to help children in other countries.

In 2013 I ran in the MDXSU elections for my position. I enjoyed working with students so much that I ran for re-election and won!

As Vice President of Art, Design, Media and Performing Arts my main responsibility is to be a student representative; I represent the student in my schools as well as handling other constitutional responsibilities. During my first year in office I looked after societies and oversaw the media, a job which included signing off each issue of the newspaper and securing a podcast memorandum with the University.

I’m here to represent you so please don’t hesitate to contact me and I’ll help you as much as I can. You can drop by the SU office to chat in person too, and if you see me walking around campus stop me and say hi!

Jean 180x180 crop thumbnail.jpg

Jean Wong, Vice President for Business and Law

Greetings! I am here to support and express your views - not only for Business and Law but also all MDX students. Within my role, I will also be responsible for sport, societies, finance and accommodation & housing.

In my sabbatical year, I’d like to achieve my manifesto pledges. With your support, we can accomplish them together - improving Middlesex Uni and it’s student’s experience. Creating an unforgettably great student experience for you will be my first priority. To achieve this, I will work closely with other officers as well as entertainment organisations to make this coming year everything it can be.

During my years at Middlesex, I studied Business Management BA (Fast Track) and was an active individual, which lead me to take part in some amazing experiences. Through Middlesex Uni sport, I discovered karate and became a medalist in British and College Sport (BUCS) in my second year. Academically, I became a Student Learning Advisor supporting students like you with their assignments. I also worked with the university as an ambassador at various events on campus. Last but not least, I was part of Community Support Team (CST) where I volunteer to give back to our local community.

If you have any questions or just want to have a conversation. I am more than happy to share my experiences with you.

Hopefully see you around campus, if I do approach you don’t run away because I will find you eventually.

Remember, I am here to amplify your voice and represent you as individual, so get in touch!
