With yet another year having passed by in the blink of an eye, our very own Middlesex Students’ Union found itself once more holding its annual Results Night this past Friday, the 13th of March, at MDX House. This year, the event brought with it some additional flair by playing host to the MDXSU Awards and their own results in its earlier half, as well as boasting a voting count of over seven thousand, an approximate 50% increase on last year’s voting total.
As nominees, voters, and supporters alike started to trickle in around 5:30 PM, they were offered a chance to mingle, a huge Connect 4 set and a Selfie Pod having been arranged to get people in the mood for the evening. Candidates took this time as a chance to share their feelings ahead of the start of the event.
“I wish we would have had around a week to have campaigned. I got three days and I interacted with a lot of students in that time, but I felt I was unable to reach each and every student. That’s the issue I faced, at least,” shared candidate for SU President, Amit Kumar, reflecting on his campaign ahead of finding out the result of the culmination of his work.
Contrastingly, candidate for Activities Officer, Abdallah Ebbo Ibrahim, was feeling pleased with the effort he had put in: “I’m excited to see the results. We did what we had to do, we campaigned to the utmost level. The outcome is something we can’t predict, but I hope that I win. Even if that doesn’t happen, I hope that whoever emerges would serve the students and do what’s needed.”
Other candidates, such as candidate for Education Officer Krish Kirupanathan and candidate for Activities Officer Miné Muslu-Richards, shared similar sentiments of hopefulness, but at the same time well-wishes for the others running, an air of good sportsmanship surrounding them.
After a short wait, everybody was invited to step through the Black & Gold themed tinsel curtains into the main event area, where they were greeted with a pop-up bar, as well as some refreshments on each of the tables. Once people had settled down, attention was steered upfront towards the stage, where the first portion revealed the winners of the various MDXSU Awards, including titles like “Outstanding Contribution to Student Life” and “Student-Led Event of the Year”.
It was then time for the most anticipated part of the event, where, to the tune of tensions rising with each drumroll, the presenters lead with the candidate winners for the awards of “Kindest Candidate”, “Best Banner”, and “Best Branding”, which went to Krish, Miné, and Abdallah respectively.
Thereafter, with bated breath, the winning candidates for the main roles were finally announced. With 4023 votes, Little Panwar & Queenesther Chibugo Nwanya won the two positions of elected ‘Student Trustees’. With 1950 votes after three stages of count, the winner for ‘Education Officer’ is Temi Osinubi. At 1946 votes after six stages of count, the winner for ‘Activities Officer’ is Nas. Last, but by no means least, at 1627 votes after four stages of count, Coco Simon won the position of ‘S.U. President’.
While not all winners could unfortunately make the event, those present took to the stage in celebration and lined up to have their pictures taken by the Step & Repeat banners, where they had the following to share.
“It’s surreal. I’ll be honest, sitting down, I had it in my mind that I wouldn’t win, but, you know, God prevails. As they said my name I sat in shock and my friends next to me just screamed my name to wake me up,” said Temi, feeling overwhelmed with positivity. When asked about his ambitions for his time as Education Officer, he responded: “Challenging the university a lot more and holding them to their word. Students believe that I can do that, as well as create a networking system for them to get jobs after university.”
Activities Officer winner Nas shared a funny anecdote in retrospect, admitting: “I wasn’t going to stay [for the results] but I got convinced by a lot of people to see it through to the end. I sat down, calmed my nerves down, and you know — I won.” Beyond the celebratory vibes, he reassured voters of his commitment, wanting them to know: “I’m not someone who speaks too much, I show my workings through actions, which is why 2026/2027 is going to be a great year for you guys.”
Full of optimism and excited for their term throughout the upcoming academic year, the newly elected officials will be taking their positions in July, ready to help make Middlesex an even fairer and more engaging university.
