The MDXSU Awards are our way of celebrating the amazing students and staff at Middlesex, recognising their impact and achievements over the past academic year. From passionate students to our incredible Student Groups, dedicated academics to amazing support staff, help us to recognise and celebrate the hard work of the MDX community.

The Awards

Community Contribution Award

This award recognises individuals and groups from the Middlesex staff and student body who have supported the University or wider local community during the Covid-19 pandemic who may not previously have been recognised for their contribution and deserve celebrating. 

This might include: 

  • Going above and beyond to support the Middlesex or wider local community through volunteering, fundraising, community organising or providing a support network 

  • Making a significant impact to others, either through smaller-scale support and activity on an individual basis, or through organising or taking part in a larger group activity 

The above list is not extensive and we would love to hear about anyone who has provided support to the Middlesex or wider local community. 

Society of the Year

This award celebrates the hard work of our amazing societies, and the impact they make on life at Middlesex – organising events, leading campaigns and providing opportunities for students to meet new people or learn new things.   

The winning group will have:   

  • Created a sense of community for students to engage with 

  • Kept a variety of events, activities, workshops and/or campaigns going throughout the pandemic 

  • Remained active and visible online so students and MDXSU know what they’re up to 

  • Collaborated with other groups/teams (within MDX or external) to put on activity for students 

  • Communicated effectively with the MDXSU Student Groups Coordinator 

Liberation Group of the Year

This award celebrates the hard work of our amazing liberation groups, and the impact they make on life at Middlesex – organising events, leading campaigns and providing opportunities for students to meet new people or learn new things.   

We are looking for a group who has:   

  • Created a safe space and sense of community for students to engage with  

  • Worked to develop students' knowledge of the challenges their liberation group faces through online activity or campaigns 

  • Organised an activity or an event that is inclusive and aware of the diversity of students at MDX, and acknowledging intersectionality 

Wellbeing and Inclusivity Award

This award recognises an student or group who has made an active effort to support and encourage student wellbeing, has worked to ensure virtual activity is accessible and inclusive of all, or has worked to inspire and educate others through activity which celebrates inclusivity. 

We are looking for a student or group who has:  

  • Actively sought to support students’ wellbeing throughout the pandemic, either with an event, activity, campaign, project or initiative they’ve developed 

  • Made the effort to make activity accessible and inclusive to as many students as possible 

  • Organised or promoted activity which celebrates inclusivity and the diversity of Middlesex University 

Community Placement Student of the Year

This award recognises a student who has had a positive influence on the local community through engaging in the Community Placement Scheme. 

We are looking for a student who:   

  • Has gone above and beyond to support the organisation that they have been placed in  

  • Approached tasks with a positive attitude   

  • Has been proactive in offering their skills and knowledge to make an impact  

  • Intentionally engaged with/researched the community they’re working with to find out more about their diverse needs 

  • Provided an excellent response to the changing needs of the community in regards to Covid-19 

Outstanding Contribution to Student Media

This award recognises students who have made an outstanding contribution to Student Media at Middlesex.  
 
We are looking for a student or group who has:  

  • Shown passion and enthusiasm for Student Media 

  • Made a positive contribution to Student Media 

  • Been dedicated and reliable 

Outstanding Contribution to Student Communities

This award recognises a student or group who has made a positive contribution to a specific community on campus.  

We are looking for a student or group who:   

  • Has successfully gained awareness and/or recognition for students within one of our 7 Student Communities  (mature students, international students, student parents and carers, commuter students, postgrad students, healthcare students or Erasmus and exchange students) 

  • Organised an activity or an event that is inclusive and aware of the diversity of our Student Communities 

  • Engaged students in the activity of one of our Student Communities 

Student Voice Leader of the Year

This award recognises the work of a Student Voice Leader within each faculty who has spent the year working hard to make changes for students at Middlesex.  

We’re looking for a Student Voice Leader who has:  

  • Engaged with the students they represent, gathering feedback and keeping their coursemates informed

  • Worked with their department leaders and academic staff

  • Made positive changes on their course and contributed to student life at MDX

  • Engaged with training and other opportunities offered by MDXSU

Outstanding Contribution to Student Life

The judges in this category are looking to celebrate a student who has made an outstanding contribution to student life at MDX and helped others to make the most of their time here. 

We are looking for a student who: 

  • Has encouraged, empowered and inspired their peers 

  • Has made a real positive impact at Middlesex University 

  • Has developed and shown excellent leadership skills 

  • Has passion, enthusiasm and dedication 

Academic Staff Member of the Year

This award recognises an outstanding member of academic or teaching staff within each Faculty who has had a positive impact on the learning and student experience. 

Extra consideration will be given to nominations that mention and include examples of:    

  • Assessment and essay feedback    

  • Innovative teaching style and originality    

  • Impact on the learning experience of students   

  • A student-centred and tailored approach to teaching    

Champion for Students

This award recognises a member of staff who acts as a champion for students and their voices. 

Extra consideration will be given to nominations that mention and include examples of:    

  • Effective use of student feedback    

  • The promotion of student voice and student voice leaders    

  • Student involvement and engagement with curriculum design and delivery    

  • Empowering students to engage in additional opportunities 

  • Promoting wellbeing and student support  

  • Informed Tutoring Support to students 

Postgraduate Research Supervisor of the Year

This award recognises a postgraduate research supervisor who has played a crucial part in postgraduate students’ learning, development and overall experience. 

Extra consideration will be given to nominations that mention and include examples of:    

  • Expertise in subject areas   

  • Student support and encouragement    

  • Assistance with planning, process and research    

Professional Services Staff Member of the Year

This award recognises a member of non-teaching staff who has had a positive impact on the student experience and MDX community. This includes those working in administration, student support, library, catering, reception, MDX works and in any non-teaching role within the university. 

 
Extra consideration will be given to nominations that mention and include examples of:    

  • Impact on the student experience    

  • Student support and encouragement    

  • Friendliness and approachability    

Course of the Year

This award recognises a course or programme whose staff work collectively to provide an outstanding student experience for those studying on the course or programme. 

Extra consideration will be given to nominations that mention and include examples of:    

  • Additional activities, opportunities and skills development    

  • Employability    

  • Effective use of student feedback    

  • Student engagement with curriculum design/teaching
