Meningitis: Key Information & Where to Get Support

You may have seen recent news about meningitis cases affecting students in the Canterbury area. We understand this may feel worrying, so we want to make sure you know where to find reliable information and what to do if you have concerns.

At this time, there is no indication that cases have spread beyond Kent. However, it’s important to stay informed and know how to look after yourself and others.

Know the symptoms

Meningitis can develop quickly, so it’s important to be aware of the signs.

Common symptoms include:

  • High temperature (fever)
  • Headache
  • Feeling or being sick
  • Stiff neck
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Feeling very tired or drowsy
  • A rash that does not fade when pressed (not always present)

When to seek medical help

If you are worried about symptoms or possible exposure:

  • Call NHS 111 for advice and they will be able to advise you in the next steps

⚠️ Do not wait for all symptoms to appear — meningitis can become serious very quickly.
