Whether you are a new student or a seasoned Middlesex veteran, you have likely heard of the Middlesex Student Union (MDXSU) in passing. However, if you have never interacted with the organisation before, you might be wondering: What exactly does the Student Union do? 

The MDXSU exists to make your university experience as rewarding, enjoyable, and stress-free as possible both inside and outside the classroom. From academic support to social events, here is everything you need to know about the Middlesex Student Union. 

Are you struggling with an academic issue and unsure where to turn? Maybe you are facing challenges with coursework, assessments, or personal circumstances affecting your studies. While lecturers and tutors are available to assist, sometimes an independent voice is needed, which is when and where your SU steps in. 

The Advice Service offers free, confidential support on a range of academic matters, including appeals, extensions and support if you have been accused of plagiarism or other misconduct. Additionally, the Student Union ensures student voices are heard at the highest levels of the university, representing your interests in meetings with faculty and senior leadership. 

However, if all of this leads you to believe the Student Union only deals with incredibly serious matters, think again. MDXSU organises a full calendar of events throughout the academic year, designed to help you meet new people. From Freshers’ Week socials to a range of fun workshops, there is oftentimes something happening. So, enjoy yourself, whether it be quizzes, film nights, or cultural events, there are plenty of opportunities for you to make good memories of your time at university. Be sure to check our website and social media for updates on when and where all of this happens throughout the year. 

In this same fun-oriented vein, one of the nicer benefits of university life is getting to join a range of societies, which is something the MDXSU oversees. Whether your interests lie in sports, arts, gaming, or something else, there is and can be a group for you. Societies are an excellent way to enrich your university experience, so why not reach out and check what is available? 

One more important thing to be aware of is that MDXSU is not just a service. It is your Student Union, run by students, for students. So, remember that you yourself can stand in the annual elections for positions like that of Student Officer and influence the university policies you feel strongly about. Your time at Middlesex should be enjoyable, fulfilling, and full of opportunities and MDXSU is here to ensure that it is.
