Black Students’ Experience Research: An Update

Monday 11-10-2021 - 12:31

MDXSU published the Black students’ experience report in May 2021. The report focuses on the student journey and experiences of Black students at MDX. Middlesex University is one of the most diverse universities and MDXSU is proud of its diversity and in supporting approximately 4,500 Black students enrolled (2020-2021). The paper is the result of seven months of research conducted by MDXS and the findings are varied depending on the intersections of Black identity present at MDX, with recommendations to improve the BSE at MDX and MDXSU. The BSE report strongly advocates for more imaginative solutions outside of the Higher Education Sector to improve the BSE.

The report received great feedback internal and externally. We presented the findings at Universities UK conference, and the annual learning and teach conference at MDX. These opportunities allowed the black student experience to stay at the forefront of sector conversation. MDXSU will continue to engage in these opportunities, to move forward with this crucial topic!

The recommendations are being worked on, alongside several stakeholders within MDX and MDXSU. This is a collaborative project; over the summer we liaised and coordinated next steps for implementing recommendations. The approach focuses on engaging professionals across our university community. Our framework includes data, senior leadership, and students’ success. We are working diligently to produce change!

You can get involved by reading the report, engaging with our Black History Month events, and liberation groups!
